Žirafa
Žirafa je nejvyšší ze všech suchozemských živočišných druhů. Samci dosahují velikosti od 4,8 až do 5,5 metru a váží až 900 kilogramů, dožívá se v průměru 30-35 let. Samice jsou obecně trošku menší a lehčí.
Ač původem z Afriky je žirafa příbuzná s jelenem či krávou. Nicméně náleží do vlastní čeledi, kterou sdílí pouze se svým nejbližším příbuzným okapi.
Přirozeným prostředím pro žirafy jsou suché savany a otevřené pláně. Spásá vegetaci ve vyšších polohách než všichni ostatní savci. Díky dlouhému jazyku, šikovné stavbě páteře a ohebným nohám může žirafa dosáhnout na velké množství potravy. Dlouhým jazykem (až 50 cm) přitáhne větev, obálí jí svými hustými slinami a poté z ní sejme listí svými hřebenovitými zuby. Konzumace potravy a pití zabere žirafě denně přibližně dvanáct hodin. Žirafy odpočívají ve stoje, jen výjimečně spí vsedě s hlavou opřenou o zadek. Spánku žirafa věnuje každý den maximálně 7 minut.
Samice se páří pouze s dominantním samcem v dané lokalitě. Samci o dominantu bojují přetlačováním se pomocí krků, někdy jsou schopni do sebe narážet i hlavami. K tomuto boji dochází často mezi mladými samci, popřípadě při příchodu nového samce do teritoria. Po vyhraném souboji vítěz poníží soka tím že s ním předstírá páření. Březost u samic trvá 457 dní po kterých se narodí jedno mládě, jen výjimečně se narodí dvojčata. Obvykle se mláďata rodí v období sucha, těsně po narození váží mládě přibližně 70 kg a měří okolo 2 metrů.
Obecně je uznáváno 9 poddruhů žiraf, odlišují se především barvou, vzorem a místem původu.
Žirafa síťovaná – velké polygonální jaterní fleky ohraničené sítí světlých bílých čar. Skvrny někdy vypadají temně rudě a pokrývají i nohy. Výskyt: severovýchodní Keňa, Etiopie, Somálsko.
- Žirafa angolská – velké fleky a vroubky kolem hran rozprostírající se po celé noze. Výskyt: Angola, Zambie.
- Žirafa kordofanská – menší, méně pravidelné fleky které pokrývají vnitřní čast nohy. Výskyt: západní a jihozápadní Súdán.
- Žirafa masajská – zubaté hrany, fleky tvaru vinného listu, barva temně čokoládová s nažloutlým pozadím. Výskyt: střední a jižní Keňa, Tanzanie.
- Žirafa nubijská – velké, čtyřstěnné fleky kaštanové barvy na našedlém pozadí, žádné fleky na vnitřní straně nohou. Výskyt: východní Súdán, severovýchodní Kongo.
- Žirafa kapská – zaoblené a kaňkovité skvrny, některé hvězdicovitého tvaru na světlém pozadí. Výskyt: Jižní Afrika, Namibie, Botswana, Mozambik.
- Žirafa zambijská – hvězdicovité nebo listnaté skvrny rozpínající se až k spodní části nohou. Výskyt: východní Zambie.
- Žirafa západoafrická – mnoho vybledlých, nažloutlých červených skvrn. Výskyt: Čad.
- Žirafa Rothschildova – tmavě hnědé kaňkovité nebo obdélníkové skvrny s krémovými linkami. Hlezno může být skvrnité. Výskyt: Uganda, severní až centrální Keňa.
